Machinery maintenance practices have been greatly changed and evolved over the last 20 years and it is instructive to study these developments. From a Plant Management or Building Operators point of view, the primary challenge today must be to continually improve equipment reliability, while at the same time eliminate unnecessary maintenance activities, improve equipment maintainability and eliminate behavior that reduces effectiveness and efficiency.
Condition monitoring (CM) is the process of monitoring a parameter of condition (vibration, temperature, Current, sound, etc.) in machinery/ rotating equipment (Electromotors, Engines, Pumps, Fans, Gearboxes, Compressors, etc.), in order to identify a significant change which is indicative of a developing fault. It is a major component of predictive maintenance. The use of conditional monitoring enables early detection and elimination of equipment defects and allows maintenance to be scheduled, or other actions to be taken to prevent failure and avoid its consequences.
