We would like you to join us in Mohandes Monthly Seminar on Landscape of Research and Innovation in Ontario, an informative seminar by Honorable Reza Moridi, Minister of Research, Innovation and Science:

This talk will be conducted in English.

With half of Canada’s research capacity, Ontario is one of the top five jurisdictions in North America for research and innovation.  Every year about $14 billion of research and innovation is being conducted in this Province.  Government of Ontario invests in the whole spectrum of research and innovation from supporting very basic and fundamental science to commercialization. In his presentation, Minister Moridi will discuss the government’s programs and will provide an overview of Ontario’s research and commercialization establishments.

Honorary Chair:

As a new tradition, established by the 30th board, senior long lasting members of Mohandes will be chosen to be the honorary chair of the seminar sessions. The honorary chair of the October seminar is Dr. Arsalan Mohajer. Arsalan has been a Geoscientist, Nuclear Site-Safety Consultant and Professor at the University of Toronto. Dr. Mohajer served as member of the first board of directors of Kanoon Mohandes back in 1989, and president of Kanoon a few years later.

About the speaker:

Reza Moridi currently serves as Minister of Research, Innovation and Science.  Moridi was first elected to the Ontario legislature in 2007 as MPP for Richmond Hill. He was re-elected in 2011 and 2014. Prior to that, he was Minister of Research and Innovation, as well as Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities.

Moridi has served as the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Energy, the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, and the Minister of Research and Innovation. He was the Chair of the Cabinet Committee on Education, Skills and Economy and has served on the parliamentary committees on Public Accounts, General Government and Justice Policy.

Moridi has introduced parliamentary motions proclaiming the first day of spring as Nowruz, February 21st as International Mother Language Day and May 1st as Doctors’ Day in Ontario. He also introduced a private member’s bill to amend the Municipal Act 2001 to provide that the Chair and CEO of York Region must be elected by popular vote.  He led government bills through the House and Committees to establish the Ontario College of Trades and Algoma University and to amend the College’s Collective Bargaining Act with respect to part-time staff .

Reza Moridi is a graduate of Tehran University, Iran (BSc and MSc) and Brunel University London, UK (MTech and PhD).  Moridi was elected Fellow of the Institute of Physics and admitted as Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology of the UK.  In recognition of his contributions to the understanding of nuclear materials and radiation, the Canadian Nuclear Society presented him with the Education and Communication Award.  Also, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the profession of Health Physics, the Health Physics Society of the USA designated him as a Fellow of the Society.  For his extensive community and humanitarian work, Moridi has received numerous awards and recognition.

Prior to entering into politics, Reza held a 17-year career at the Radiation Safety Institute of Canada where he was the Vice-President and Chief Scientist.  He also worked in the electrical industry as an executive and in academia as a professor and administrator.

In his current role, Moridi’s extensive political, business, academic and scientific backgrounds provide him with the knowledge and experience required to bridge the research and academic institutions with business and government.
